Eutelsat has successfully concluded talks for acquiring the GE-23 satellite, associated customer contracts and orbital rights from GE Capital. The acquisition is reported to be worth US $228 million.

The transaction will close in the second half of this year but remains subject to regulatory approvals.

Eutelsat will integrate the GE-23 in its fleet and rename it as Eutelsat 172A.

The GE-23 was built by Thales Alenia Space and launched in December 2005 with an expected useful life of 15 years.

The new satellite is expected to boost Eutelsat's plans of expansion in the Asia-Pacific region.
