Have you ever imagined a news coverage gripping viewer's interest 24x7? It might had happened earlier, when India lifted the World Cup or say when the Judgment Day of Jama Masjid was about to come, viewers were reluctant to leave the couch and were glued to their seats to watch news channels apart from watching reality shows or saas bahu episodes.
The recent Anna Hazare movement has not only moved the people who are joining the movement but also the remote controlled audience who don't have time to go on the spot and be a part of it. Thanks to the 24x7 media coverage which updates them of all the information related to the Lokapal Bill or any meeting related to the movement. Flip the channel and one can see Anna addressing the 'Janta Janardan'(Common People) and flip another one can see debate in process which speaks only about corruption and Anna's Jan Lokpal Bill.
According to data with TAM, a Television Audience Monitoring Agency, the Hazare effect has enabled the viewership of Hindi as well as English news channels to nearly double in the week ending August 20, as compared to the previous week.
The share of the Hindi news channels have increased by 87 per cent to 11.02 points upcountry, the all-India figure for their English counterparts combined was 0.54 points, as viewership shot up by 74 per cent. In the earlier four weeks, Hindi and English news channels had recorded an average genre share of 5.7 per cent and 0.33 per cent, respectively.
The recent survey of TAM also focuses on the interest levels of the viewers which got increased by 98% as the average daily time spent on Hindi news channels has risen to 16.9 minutes from 8.5. Similar results came out in the sphere of English Channels, where the daily average time spent more than doubled to 0.72 minutes, as against the 0.30 minutes spent earlier on an all-India level.
The recent Anna Movement has got thumbs up and support from each part of India including Indian cricket crazy fans and media channels that lost interest in the game which was proved after the test matches could contribute only 3.25 per cent to news content.
Anna's fast has entered the 11th day and he still has the courage to continue with supporters and one liners. We can only guess what’s there in store but whatsoever the results are, Media and its coverage will thank Anna for continuing it for such a long time so that they could cover the event at ease.
Now, it’s the testing time of the script writers of the serials as to how they can ask their viewers to back on the couch to watch the serials. A soap on the recent Jan Lokpal Movement might garner some viewer and might give them some potential to fight in rat race of TRP's (Television Rating Points).
