Facebook Inc named Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg as a member of its board of directors.

The announcement makes Sandberg the first woman director in the company whose remaining seven directors happen to be all men.

Sandberg, 42, joined Facebook in 2008 and was in charge of the company’s business operations which included sales, marketing, business development, legal, human resources, public policy and communications.

Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO, Facebook said that Sandberg has been central to the company’s growth and success over the years and her experience both at Facebook and on public company boards makes her a natural fit for the company’s board.

Sandberg worked for Google prior to joining Facebook. She was also a former chief of staff to Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers during the Clinton administration and holds seats on the board of Walt Disney Co and several non-profit organizations.
