VoIP in small and mid- size business

   Print    Email

The small and mid size business space is set to become a safe haven for those new players who made their foray into the voice-over internet protocol (VOIP) telephony market. Bigger players like Cisco Systems, Avaya, Alcatel-Lucent and Siemens made heavy investments into the VoIP systems making it difficult for new entrants to penetrate the market. Skype has been trying to make its entry into the enterprise market. It has tied up with Avaya to link the latter's communications systems to Skype's own service, allowing Avaya users to access Skype Connect. Google has also joined the bandwagon with its launch in August which allows users to make calls with its web email service Gmail. However Google and Skype have a tough road ahead as their IP telephony services are viewed as consumer grade technology. Skype and Google will need to prove their reliability and security to enterprise customers.
