Information and Broadcasting ministry is considering including provisions in the Press and Registration of Books and Publications Bill, 2011 to check incidents of paid news.

Information and Broadcasting minister Manish Tewari stated this in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.

"Based on the recommendations of the Standing Committee in regard to Press and Registration of Books and Publications Bill, 2011, it is being considered to include the provisions to check the incidents of paid news," Tewari said in the reply.

He said that the Press Council of India received complaints related to print media and added that the complaints related to the electronic media were dealt as per the Programme and Advertising Code under the Cable TV Networks (Regulation) Act.

Further interestingly, the Press Council of India Committee which had examined the malaise of Paid News had found at least 126 confirmed cases of paid news. In addition, 61 candidates admitted to having paid for news in the print and electronic media.
