India’s telecom industry continues its upward trajectory, with the total subscriber base reaching 653.92 million by the end of May 2010, according to the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). This marks a steady growth of 2.49% compared to April 2010, when the total stood at 638.05 million.

The data highlights the country’s expanding mobile connectivity, while also shedding light on the continued decline of wireline subscribers.

Mobile Subscribers Drive Growth

The mobile telecom sector has been the key driver of this growth, with mobile subscriptions increasing by 2.71% in May 2010. The total mobile subscriber base grew to 617.53 million, up from 601.22 million in April.

Top contributors:

  • Bharti Airtel: Added 3 million new users in May, leading the growth.
  • Reliance Communications: Followed closely with 2.8 million additions.
  • Vodafone Essar: Increased its user base by 2.59 million during the same period.

This growth reflects the strong demand for mobile connectivity across urban and rural India, driven by competitive pricing and improved service accessibility.

Decline in Wireline Subscriptions

While mobile services continue to thrive, India’s wireline subscriber base has witnessed a steady decline. The total wireline subscriptions dropped to 36.39 million in May 2010, down from 36.83 million in April.

Market share in the wireline sector:

  • BSNL: Holds a commanding share of 74.75%, maintaining its position as the market leader.
  • MTNL: Accounts for 9.58% of the total wireline subscriber base.

The decline highlights a growing preference for mobile services over traditional landline connections, reflecting evolving consumer habits.

Broadband Connectivity on the Rise

The TRAI report also highlights encouraging growth in broadband subscriptions. The total broadband subscriber base rose by 2.67%, increasing from 9 million in April to 9.24 million in May 2010.

Key factors driving broadband growth:

  • Increasing demand for high-speed internet access across urban areas.
  • Expanding broadband infrastructure by private and government players.
  • Affordable plans that attract individual users and small businesses.

The growth in broadband subscriptions reflects India’s gradual but steady move towards a digitally connected society.

India’s Growing Telecom Footprint

The steady rise in India’s telecom subscriber base underscores the sector’s pivotal role in connecting millions across the country. With mobile services driving growth and broadband adoption gaining momentum, the telecom industry remains a cornerstone of India’s digital transformation.

As telecom operators continue to innovate with better connectivity, affordable plans, and expanded coverage, the sector is poised for further growth, bridging gaps and empowering users across the nation.
